Libby Birch, Western Bulldogs AFLW player
Libby Birch was recruited as a rookie to the Western Bulldogs AFLW team and made her debut in 2017 in the Round 1 match against Fremantle.
In 2018, she was nominated for a Rising Star Award, after her stellar performance against Brisbane in February 2018. She played in the Bulldogs’ premiership side and made the 2018 All Australian Female Squad.
Libby speaks to Bob Jane T-Marts about her experience on and off the field and describes some of the similarities between playing AFL and driving safely on the road.
She says one of the most important similarities between the two is the vision required.
“You have to have really good awareness around you,” she says.
“That means constant awareness of where the cars are around you and where you are on the road.
“That’s akin to being on the footy ground, picking up a footy and knowing where your teammate is.
“But I also think every time you get in a car you have a responsibility to look after the person in the car and yourself, and I think that’s really alike to looking after your teammates on the footy field.
She says “car knowledge is power”.
Libby says it is important to take the time to learn basic tyre maintenance such as checking the tyre pressure, determining tread depth and knowing how to change a tyre.
“I check my tyres every two to three weeks.”
