How to Tell If Your Tyres Need Replacing: 5 Warning Signs

How to Tell If Your Tyres Need Replacing: 5 Warning Signs

Why Recognising Tyre Wear Matters?

Your tyres are critical to your vehicle’s safety and performance. They're the only contact point between your car and the road—and when they wear down, your braking, steering, and grip are all compromised. Despite their importance, tyres are often ignored until something goes wrong.

Knowing when to change tyres and recognising early tyre replacement signs can protect not only your car but also your life. Whether you’re commuting through city traffic or heading out on a long regional drive, properly maintained tyres make all the difference.

Five Warning Signs You Need a Tyre Replacement

Let’s break down the most common and reliable indicators that it’s time to replace your tyres.

1. Low Tread Depth

Your tyre tread depth plays a major role in road grip, especially in wet conditions. In Australia, the legal minimum tread depth is 1.5mm across the entire circumference of the tyre. Anything less can lead to hydroplaning, longer stopping distances, and even fines.

Most tyres have tread wear indicators built into the grooves. If the tread is worn down to the same level as the indicator bars, it's time for a replacement. Ignoring this could seriously impact your safety on the road.

2. Cracks, Cuts, or Bulges

Inspect your tyres regularly for visible damage. Cracks in the sidewall, deep cuts, or bulging areas are all signs of structural issues. These weaknesses can result from impact with kerbs or potholes and can lead to sudden tyre failure if not addressed promptly.

Any visible damage to your tyre casing is a red flag and should be assessed by a tyre professional immediately.

3. Unusual Vibrations While Driving

If your steering wheel shakes or your car vibrates more than usual—especially at highway speeds—it could be more than a balancing issue. Vibrations can result from uneven wear, internal tyre damage, or alignment issues, all of which could mean your tyres need replacing.

If vibration continues even after balancing and rotation, it may be time for a new set of tyres.

4. Tyres Are More Than 5–6 Years Old

Rubber degrades over time, regardless of tread depth. Most tyre manufacturers recommend replacing tyres every 6 to 10 years, even if they appear to be in good condition. Older tyres become hard, brittle, and more prone to cracking and failure.

Check your tyres’ manufacture dates (found on the sidewall as a 4-digit code). For example, 3119 means the tyre was made in the 31st week of 2019.

5. Uneven Wear Patterns

Is one side of your tyre more worn than the other? This could be due to incorrect wheel alignment, unbalanced suspension, or over/under-inflation. Driving on unevenly worn tyres can cause poor traction, especially during cornering or in wet weather.

If your tyres show uneven wear, it's essential to both replace the affected tyre(s) and fix the root cause to prevent future damage.

How to Check Tyre Tread Depth

Checking tyre tread depth is easy and only takes a few minutes:

  • Use a tread depth gauge, available at most auto stores
  • Insert a 20c coin into the tread. If the tread doesn't reach the bill of the platypus, it's below 3mm and nearing the legal limit

Tyres with low tread are unsafe and may fail roadworthy inspections. For more guidance on safety checks, refer to the NSW Government’s Roadworthiness Guide.

Australian Safety Standards on Tyres

Australia's Vehicle Standards are governed by the Australian Design Rules (ADRs), which include strict requirements for tyres. ADR 23 covers everything from tread depth to load rating and tyre construction.

Key rules include:

  • Tread depth must be a minimum of 1.5mm
  • Tyres must match the manufacturer’s specifications for load and speed rating
  • Visible damage, like exposed cords or deep cuts, make tyres unroadworthy
  • Failure to comply can result in fines, failed inspections, or even voided insurance in the event of an accident.

Final Thoughts

Recognising the signs of tyre wear is crucial for staying safe on the road. Whether it's diminished tyre tread depth, sidewall damage, or simply the age of the tyre, understanding when to change tyres can save you from breakdowns, accidents, and costly repairs.
