The five wheels

Check the tyre before the wheel

With a size this rare, the tyre is often harder to find than the wheel. Confirm a tyre exists in your width and profile, with the right load and speed rating, before you buy. Start with our sport performance tyres.

What 21s feel like

A 21-inch tyre has a very short sidewall. Steering feels crisp, but the ride is firmer, and kerbs and potholes are a bigger risk to the rim. Coming from 20s you will notice a little; from 19s, a lot.

Before you buy

  • Pattern. 5x120 suits many BMWs, 5x112 suits many Audi, VW and Mercedes-Benz models.
  • Centre bore. Prestige hubs vary, so confirm the bore or plan for rings.
  • Brake clearance. Large performance brakes can foul some spoke shapes.
  • Staggered fit. Front and rear widths cannot be swapped once fitted.
  • Load rating. Heavy SUVs need a rating that covers their weight.

Living with 21s

  • Pressures: check them monthly, as low pressure exposes the rim to damage.
  • Kerbs: leave a gap when parking, because there is little rubber to protect the lip.
  • Rotation: a staggered M147 set can only swap side to side.
  • Tyre wear: wide, low tyres can wear the inner edge quickly if the alignment is out.

Common questions

Can I run 21s on a family SUV?

Only if the vehicle maker lists a 21-inch option or your store confirms clearance. Ride comfort will drop.

Why is the choice so small?

Few vehicles use 21-inch wheels, so few designs are made in that size.

Can I mix the M146 and M147?

Keep the same design on each axle. Mixing designs side to side looks odd and the offsets may differ.

How do I clean matte black wheels?

Use a pH-neutral cleaner and a soft brush. Avoid polishes, which leave shiny patches on a matte finish.
