XL load ratings and 18-inch sizes

XL tyres are reinforced to carry more weight at the same pressure. Where your placard asks for XL, a standard tyre falls short. Where it does not, an XL can still be fitted, but ask the store about ride feel.

For efficiency, compare EV tyres with standard tyres on rolling resistance, wet grip and noise labels.

Choosing between 17, 18 and 19-inch tyres

The 215/60R17 has the tallest sidewall and the lowest price. The 245/45R19 XL is wider, with a shorter wall, and it costs noticeably more. Everything in between is a trade of comfort against cost.

Wherever you land, keep all four tyres to one size and construction. Mixed sizes change rolling diameter and wear unevenly across the set.

Because so many of these sizes are XL-rated, take a photo of your sidewall when you order ahead. The load index and speed rating are printed right beside the size.
