Essential and Premium Dolphins use different factory wheel diameters

BYD’s current Australian Dolphin specification sheet lists two tyre sizes, tied to the grade rather than one universal fitment. The Essential is specified with 195/60R16 tyres, while the Premium is specified with 205/50R17 tyres. That split is the starting point: never order an Essential tyre from a Premium size listing.

  • Dolphin Essential: 195/60R16

Those are current Australian specification-sheet figures, not a shortcut around checking the actual vehicle. A used Dolphin may have aftermarket wheels, and year or market differences can matter. Read the tyre placard and the complete markings on the tyre already fitted before selecting a replacement.

Compare within the Dolphin’s own 16- or 17-inch fitment

The two factory sizes are not interchangeable just because both belong to a Dolphin. The 17-inch Premium tyre has a lower-profile sidewall than the 16-inch Essential tyre, so it is sensible to compare compatible options for the grade you own rather than treating wheel diameter as a styling choice. Size, load index and speed rating remain the first filters; they protect the vehicle’s intended fitment.

Once those requirements are fixed, everyday Dolphin use gives the comparison some real focus. City commuting, kerbs, patched suburban roads and a quiet electric drivetrain can make ride disturbance and road noise noticeable. Look at the compatible tyres’ wet-road performance, comfort and noise characteristics alongside expected wear, rather than assuming an EV label or a low rolling-resistance claim settles the decision. Keep pressures at the manufacturer’s recommendation.

A tyre change is not an Essential-to-Premium wheel conversion

Do not move from 195/60R16 to 205/50R17 simply because the Premium fitment is available in online search results. A wheel-and-tyre package change affects more than the tyre: rim dimensions, clearance, load capacity, rolling diameter and applicable modification requirements all need checking. For a like-for-like replacement, choose the size and ratings shown on the placard for your particular Dolphin.

Bob Jane’s rego or vehicle lookup can narrow the product grid to suitable options. If you know the full sidewall marking, use the tyre-size filter as a second check. Where the lookup, placard and existing tyres disagree, stop and confirm the vehicle’s original specification through the owner’s manual or a qualified fitter before purchase.
