The Ford Ranger often works hard during the week and heads away on the weekend: carrying tools, towing a van or boat, and running gravel roads to the campsite. That makes load rating as important as tread pattern when choosing Ranger tyres. Search by your vehicle or tyre size on this page to compare what fits.

Factory tyre sizes for the Ranger

The current generation arrived in 2022, and the previous generation is still a common sight. Factory sizes by grade:

  • 2022-on most XL and XLS: 255/70R16
  • 2022-on XLT: 255/70R17
  • 2022-on Sport and Wildtrak: 255/65R18
  • 2022-on Platinum: 255/55R20
  • Wildtrak X: 265/70R17
  • Raptor (both generations): 285/70R17
  • Super Duty: 275/70R18
  • 2018–2022 XL and XLS: 255/70R16 (215/70R16 on the XL 2.2 4x2 manual cab-chassis)
  • 2018–2022 XLT: 265/65R17; Wildtrak: 265/60R18

If the wheels have been changed from standard, or the ute has been modified, confirm against the tyre placard on the driver's door jamb. It is the final word on size, load index and speed rating.

Choosing tyres for how you use your Ranger

For a ute mainly driven on sealed roads, compare highway tyres for comfort, wet-road behaviour and noise. The Kumho Crugen HT51 comes in 255/70R17 and 255/70R16, plus the previous generation's 265/65R17 and 265/60R18.

If gravel roads and rough tracks are a regular part of the job or the trip, all-terrain options deserve a closer look. The BFGoodrich Trail-Terrain T/A is a road-led all-terrain in 255/65R18 and 265/65R17, while the Yokohama Geolandar A/T4 G018 covers 255/70R17, 255/65R18, 285/70R17 and 275/70R18. A rugged-looking tread is not automatically the right purchase for a ute that rarely leaves the bitumen.

Towing, load index and LT tyres

Ford rates the current model to tow up to 3500kg braked, with payload from 753kg to 1412kg depending on the variant (see Ford Australia's Ranger page). The Raptor is rated to 2500kg, and the Super Duty to 4500kg. Factory load indexes run from 110 on the Platinum to 125 on the Super Duty, and you should never fit a tyre rated below your placard.

Light-truck (LT) tyres usually carry a dual load index, such as 116/113, and their stronger construction resists punctures on heavy tows and remote tracks, at the cost of a firmer ride when the tray is empty. Examples include the BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO3 in 285/70R17 116/113S, matching the Raptor's load index, and the Geolandar A/T4 in 275/70R18 125/122S. If your placard lists an LT tyre, replace like with like, and tell your local Bob Jane T-Marts store about loads and towing before asking for a recommendation.

On 4x4 models, keep tread depth even across all four tyres, and book a wheel alignment after fitting new tyres or after hard off-road work.

What size tyres does a Ford Ranger take?

Current XLT utes take 255/70R17, Sport and Wildtrak 255/65R18, and most XL and XLS grades 255/70R16. The 2018–2022 XLT used 265/65R17 and the Wildtrak 265/60R18.

How much do Ford Ranger tyres cost?

Tyres on this page start from around $214 per tyre and go up to about $962, depending on size, brand and construction. Bob Jane T-Marts tyre prices include fitting, balancing, tubeless valves, GST and old tyre disposal. If your ute has tyre pressure sensors, ask the store about any sensor parts.

Are all-terrain tyres necessary on a Ranger?

No. They are worth considering for regular unsealed travel, but a highway tyre usually rides more quietly if most of your driving is on sealed roads.
