Taller walls or larger wheels

The 225/60R18 has the tallest sidewall here, which smooths out poor surfaces and lowers the bill. The 255/45R20 and 255/45R21 trade that for a sharper look and more wheel exposure to kerbs.

Tyres labelled for EVs are a choice to compare, not a rule. Read the noise and wet grip ratings on EV tyres and on standard options before deciding.

The 235/55R19 sits between the two extremes in diameter and price, which makes it a sensible size to compare against when you are weighing up a change.

Checking wear and age

Look across the full width of the tread, not only the centre. Wear on both shoulders points to low pressure, and wear on one shoulder points to alignment, so book a wheel alignment check if you see it.

Check pressures cold against the placard each month. Read the four-digit date code too: 3524 means week 35 of 2024, and an old tyre can harden even with plenty of tread. If your car carries a spare, check its pressure and date code as well, because rubber ages even when unused.
