Land Rover Defender tyres are listed in six sizes across 16, 18, 19, 20 and 22-inch rims. The range is wide, from tall-walled 16-inch tyres to a very low 22-inch, and price and ride change a lot across it.
Tyre Sizes That Fit This Collection
Factory sizes begin with 275/45R22, 255/60R20 and 255/65R19, then 255/70R18, 275/60R20 and the tall 235/85R16.
- 275/45R22 tyres: factory fitment, 2019 onwards
- 255/60R20 tyres: factory fitment, 2019 onwards
- 255/65R19 tyres: factory fitment, 2019 onwards
- 235/85R16 tyres: factory fitment, 2001–2016

- 275/60R20 tyres: factory fitment, 2024 onwards
For the Land Rover Defender, the placard in the door jamb shows the original size, and the sidewall repeats it with the load index and speed rating. The 255/60R20 and 275/60R20 share a profile but differ in width, so read the first number carefully. If you are unsure, find a store near you and ask a fitter.
Rough tracks or sealed roads
The 235/85R16 has the tallest wall and the best protection on rough tracks. The 275/45R22 is the lowest and suits sealed roads, but a short wall leaves the rim exposed to rocks and potholes.
For mixed driving, compare all-terrain tyres. If you spend serious time off the road, mud-terrain tyres have the deepest tread but are noisy and wear faster on bitumen.
Large tyres need regular care
Large tyres are costly, so check pressures cold every month and set them for the load you carry. Look over the sidewalls for cuts after any rough trip.
Read the date code on each tyre, and check the spare along with the others. Replace in pairs at minimum, and match the size and tread pattern across each axle.
Large tyres are heavy, so ask the fitter to balance each wheel carefully, because a small vibration at highway speed wears tyres and suspension quickly.
Rotation every 10,000km or so spreads the wear across all four tyres.
Tyres for other Land Rover models sit on their own pages, such as Land Rover Freelander tyres and Land Rover Range Rover Evoque tyres, so you can compare sizes and fitted prices.
FAQs
What size tyres does a Land Rover Defender take?
Factory sizes listed are 275/45R22, 255/60R20, 255/65R19, 255/70R18, 275/60R20 and 235/85R16. Check your placard for yours.
How much do Land Rover Defender tyres cost?
Land Rover Defender tyres start at $269 and go up to $740 each. The price per tyre includes fitting, balancing, tubeless valves, GST and removal of the old tyres.
Do bigger wheels hurt rough road ability?
A shorter sidewall protects the rim less and cushions less. For rough roads, taller sidewalls and all-terrain tread give the best protection.
