Compare your sidewall with the placard before ordering. Two sizes differ by only 10mm in width, so read every digit. If you would like it checked, find a store near you.

Reading XL and standard sizes

The 215/50R17 appears in both a standard and an XL build. They look alike, but the XL carries a higher load rating. Pick the one that matches the placard or exceeds it.

Tyres labelled for EVs, found under EV tyres, are one more option. Compare their wet grip and noise ratings with everyday driving tyres before deciding.

Pressures and tread checks

Check cold pressures against the placard once a month. A tyre that is a few PSI low wears the shoulders faster and uses more energy to roll.

Look at the tread across the full width. At 1.5mm the legal limit is reached, and wet braking has usually weakened before then.

The 235/45R18 is the widest standard size and costs the most, while the 215/50R17 is narrower and cheaper to replace. Narrower tyres roll more easily, which helps running costs.

When tyres come off, ask the store to check the valve and the rim edge. A worn valve seal is a common cause of slow leaks, and it costs little to renew.

How much do MG 4 tyres cost?

How do I check the tyre age on an MG 4?

The date code is a four-digit number moulded on the sidewall: the first two digits give the week and the last two the year, so 1824 means week 18 of 2024. Many fitters recommend a check after about six years.
