The Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R is a road-legal, semi-slick performance tyre for ultra-high-performance and hypersport cars, designed first and foremost for dry circuit work. It is aimed at experienced track-day drivers whose cars are built for serious lap times. Find all the Cup 2 R sizes on offer on our website, from 19-inch through to 21-inch, with many carrying a specific carmaker marking.
A motorsport compound and a bigger footprint
The tread rubber comes from Michelin's motorsport department and is made for dry tracks. Compared with the Cup 2, Michelin reduced the number of blocks on the outer shoulder and moved the central grooves closer together. That makes each block stiffer, so it can handle higher cornering loads and respond more precisely, and Michelin says the contact patch grew by nearly 10 per cent.
A step beyond the Cup 2
Michelin focuses its claims on lateral dry grip and driving precision. In its own testing at Nardo on a Porsche 911 GT2 RS, the Cup 2 R lapped 2.9 seconds quicker than the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2. That extra focus comes with less tolerance for wet or cold conditions, so the standard Cup 2 remains the more balanced option for cars that see more road use.
Markings and fitment
- Ferrari-marked sizes for rear-drive and mid-engined Ferrari models
- Porsche-marked sizes for track-focused 911 variants
- Mercedes-Benz and BMW-marked sizes, including two run-flat fitments
Most of these cars run different front and rear sizes, so match the marking and construction on each axle. Search by vehicle or tyre size on this page, then book fitting at your local Bob Jane T-Marts store so the team can confirm load index, speed rating and pressures.
FAQs
Which cars suit the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R?
Michelin says the Cup 2 R is fitted to some of the most powerful cars from Porsche, Ferrari, Mercedes-AMG, Koenigsegg and Corvette. Sizes listed here match the staggered factory sizes of the Porsche 911 GT3 (255/35R20 front, 315/30R21 rear) and the BMW M4 CSL (275/35R19 front, 285/30R20 rear). Factory sizes vary by model and grade, so check your tyre placard for the right size or ask in store.
How much do Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tyres cost?
Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tyres start from around $1,045 per tyre for the BMW-marked 275/35R19 and go up to about $1,615 for the Mercedes-Benz-marked 295/30ZR21. Price depends on size, and current pricing for each size is shown in the listing above. Prices include fitting and balancing.
Is the Cup 2 R usable in wet weather?
It is road legal, but it is built for dry circuits and Michelin makes no wet-grip claim for it. Owners advise real caution on wet roads, particularly before the tyres have warmed up, and standing water calls for extra care. If your car is driven regularly in mixed Australian weather, the standard Cup 2 or a road-biased sports tyre is the more sensible match.
