A Prado’s 150 or 250 Series changes the tyre answer before tread does
Two late-model Prado generations are on Australian roads. Toyota introduced the all-new 250 Series from Q4 2024, after the long-running 150 Series. Identify your series, grade and wheel package before searching; ‘Prado’ alone is no longer specific enough for a safe replacement decision.
- 150 Series example: CarExpert lists the 2023 GXL with 265/65R17 front and rear tyres.
- 250 Series Altitude: Toyota specifies 265/70R18 Toyo Open Country all-terrain tyres.
Those examples show the generation change, not a complete Prado size chart. A current 250 GXL is supplied with 18-inch wheels, while a previous 150 GXL reference may be 17-inch. Use the placard and full sidewall marking, not another vehicle’s size.
The 250 Altitude’s 265/70R18 A/T brief is not a 20-inch VX or Kakadu brief
Toyota’s current 250 specification separates the range further: GX and GXL have 18-inch wheels, VX and Kakadu have 20-inch premium alloys, and Altitude has 18-inch wheels with Toyo Open Country all-terrain tyres. The Altitude’s factory 265/70R18 A/T fitment is a useful guide to its off-road role, but it does not mean a VX, Kakadu or 150 Series owner should copy it.
For a Prado that mainly covers sealed-road family touring, compare compatible choices for wet-road behaviour, stability and noise. For regular gravel, remote tracks or rough access roads, an all-terrain pattern may be worth its road-noise and wear trade-offs. Choose the pattern only after the factory size, load index and speed rating are settled; a tougher-looking tyre is not a substitute for the correct specification.
A 3.5-tonne tow rating makes load planning a Prado tyre question
Toyota lists a 3,500kg maximum braked towing capacity for the current 250 range, subject to conditions and limits. When the Prado tows or is fully loaded for a trip, check the placard ratings, tyre pressures and the vehicle’s GVM, GCM and axle limits together. The actual payload includes passengers, luggage, accessories and tow-ball download, so do not assume an unloaded-day pressure or tyre choice will suit a departure day.
Use Bob Jane’s rego or vehicle lookup to narrow the product grid, then use the tyre-size filter as a second check. Where a 150/250 identification, placard and current tyre do not agree, confirm the owner’s manual or obtain fitter advice before ordering.
Toyota Prado generation and touring questions
Is 265/65R17 still a Prado tyre size?
Yes, it is listed for the 2023 150 Series GXL. It should not be assumed for a new 250 Series Prado.
Does the 250 Altitude use the same tyres as every Prado?
No. Toyota specifies 265/70R18 all-terrain tyres for Altitude, while other current grades have different wheel equipment.
Should I choose all-terrain tyres for a Prado?
Choose them when your actual use warrants them. Match the placard first, then weigh regular unsealed-road use against sealed-road comfort and noise.
