Factory tyre sizes for the Prado

Prados have been sold with different wheels and tyres over the years, so the generation and grade matter:

• 250 Series (2024 on) GX and GXL: 265/65R18
• 250 Series VX and Kakadu: 265/60R20
• 250 Series Altitude: 265/70R18, fitted with all-terrain tyres from the factory
• 150 Series: 265/65R17 on most GX and GXL models, 245/70R17 on the 2010–2012 GX, 265/60R18 on VX and Kakadu models up to 2021, and 265/55R19 on the 2021–2023 VX and Kakadu
• Earlier 120 Series: 265/65R17 on most grades, with 225/70R17 on some GX and Standard models

If your Prado has had its wheels changed, the original size may not apply, so check the tyre placard on the driver's door jamb. It is the final word on size, load index and speed rating.

Choosing tyres for how you use your Prado

If your Prado mostly runs on sealed roads, a highway-terrain tyre gives a quieter ride and good wet-road grip. The Bridgestone Dueler H/T 684II and Yokohama Geolandar H/T G056 are both offered in 265/60R18, and the G056 also comes in the 265/55R19 used on later 150 Series VX and Kakadu models.

If gravel roads, corrugations and rough tracks are common, an all-terrain tyre deserves a place on your shortlist. The Yokohama Geolandar A/T4 G018 and BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO3 both come in 265/65R17, 265/60R18 and the 250 Series' 265/65R18. These categories describe different priorities, not a ranking from ordinary to better. A touring trip with a short gravel access road may call for a different compromise from frequent remote travel.

Towing, loads and light-truck tyres

Toyota rates the 250 Series to tow up to 3,500kg braked, and CarExpert lists 3,000kg for the 2.8-litre 150 Series. With a caravan or a fully loaded car, never fit a tyre with a lower load index than your placard specifies. Many owners who tow heavily or tour remote areas choose light-truck (LT) construction, shown by a dual load index such as 120/117S on the 265/65R17 G018. LT tyres add strength and puncture resistance but can ride a little firmer when the car is unladen. If your placard lists an LT tyre, replace like with like.

On a 4WD, keep tread depth even across all four tyres and replace them in sets where you can. Run placard pressures for the load you are carrying and book a wheel alignment after fitting new tyres or hard off-road work.
