Rebuilding a box trailer, boat trailer or small camper? These 32 wheels from $72 are mostly 13x4.5 and 13x5.5 steel, with a few alloys for older small cars.

What is in this size

  • Dynamic: Sunraysia-style steel wheels, a classic look for trailers and older vehicles.
  • CSA: Ranger Steel wheels in black, white and galvanised.
  • King: galvanised and Terra white steel, including the lowest-priced wheel here.
  • Small alloys: the Devil from DWC, King's KT-5 and CSA's Bathurst Trail.

Matching your trailer hub

Most wheels here are drilled 5x108 or 5x114.3. A few dual-drilled 10x108-114.3 wheels fit either. Count the studs and measure across them, or check the old wheel, before you order.

Offsets sit between zero and +19 mm, so these wheels sit close to the hub.

Add up the load

Each wheel here is rated between about 650 and 830 kg. Add the ratings of all the trailer's wheels and make sure the total beats the fully loaded trailer. If you are close to the limit, step up to a 14-inch or 15-inch wheel.

Before you buy

  • Galvanised or painted. Choose galvanised if the trailer goes near salt water. Painted steel is fine for road-only use.
  • Tyre load. The tyre also needs to carry the weight. Check its load index.
  • Spare. Buy one extra so your spare matches the set.
  • Wheel nuts. Steel and alloy wheels can need different nut seats.

Tyres to suit

Common 13-inch sizes include 175/70R13 and 185/70R13. Pick the one with the load index your trailer needs.

When to replace trailer wheels

  • Cracks around the stud holes: replace straight away, as these spread under load.
  • Heavy rust on painted steel: rust weakens the rim and can stop the tyre sealing.
  • A bent rim after a pothole: it causes wobble and uneven tyre wear.
  • Loose wheel nuts that keep coming back: the seat may be worn, so check the wheel.

Common questions

Will a 13-inch car wheel fit my trailer?

Only if the stud pattern, centre bore and load rating all match. Many car wheels are rated too low for a loaded trailer.

Can I mix wheel brands on one trailer?

Yes, if the size, offset and rating match. A matching set looks neater and wears tyres more evenly.

How often should I check trailer wheels?

Check nuts, rims and bearings before every long trip. If you launch a boat, rinse the wheels and look them over after each trip.
