BMW X1 tyre sizes: identify F48 or U11 before comparing

A BMW X1 badge alone is not enough to choose a replacement tyre. Australia has a sizeable mix of F48-generation X1s, sold from 2015 to 2022, and U11-generation vehicles from 2022 onward. Their factory wheel packages differ materially. F48 examples commonly run from 205/65R16 through 225/50R18, while the U11 range extends from 205/65R17 to 245/40R20 on the M35i. Start by identifying the generation, then read the placard and current sidewall.

This matters when you see an X1 tyre size in a forum, marketplace listing or search result. It may be correct for an older sDrive20i but wrong for a current xDrive30i or M35i.

F48 and U11 tyres solve different fitment questions

F48 owners are often replacing tyres on 16-, 17- or 18-inch wheels and may be looking for a composed ride over broken suburban roads. U11 owners may be choosing between larger factory wheel packages, where the lower-profile tyre has a different ride and pothole response. Neither is a reason to alter the original specification without advice; it is a reason to choose a product that suits the wheel package already on the vehicle.

For family, commuting and motorway use, compare tyres only after the fitment is correct. Wet-road performance, road noise and expected service life can then be weighed against your routes and budget. If the car regularly carries passengers and luggage or spends long periods on the freeway, do not trade away the manufacturer-specified load rating for a cheaper-looking option.

Wheel packages, not model name, determine the replacement

The X1's generation, grade, drivetrain and optional wheels can all affect its tyres. Check whether the car has matching tyres front and rear, record the full specification from each tyre, and use the placard as the final authority. This protects against ordering a current-U11 fitment for an earlier F48, or treating a performance wheel package as interchangeable with a standard one.

Often, yes. F48 X1s and current U11 X1s have different factory wheel and tyre options, so never use a size from an older X1 without checking your own placard.

Do all BMW X1 variants use the same tyre size?
No. F48 and U11 generations have different factory options, and grade, drivetrain and wheel package can change the approved size. The U11 M35i, for example, can use a larger 20-inch fitment than other X1 variants.
