XC40 owners usually want a quiet, comfortable tyre that keeps the car's composed feel, and electric versions also need one that copes with extra weight. Start with the load rating and approval mark, then choose on comfort and efficiency.

Which tyre suits your XC40

  • Petrol XC40. A premium touring tyre gives the comfort and wet braking the car was tuned for. Browse everyday touring tyres.
  • Electric XC40, now badged EX40. Look for tyres built for EV weight and torque in our EV tyres, such as the Michelin e.Primacy.
  • Brands to compare. Michelin, Continental and Pirelli all make SUV touring tyres for European premium cars.
  • Alpine trips. Heading to the snow? Check whether your chosen tyre carries the mountain snowflake symbol.

Before you buy

  • VOL marking. Tyres developed with Volvo carry VOL on the sidewall. They are the closest match to the factory feel.
  • Load index. The electric version is heavier, so never drop below the placard figure.
  • Wheel size by grade. XC40 grades have used different wheel diameters. Check your own car.
  • Road noise. An EV has no engine sound to mask tyre roar. Some tyres use a foam insert inside the tread to cut it.
  • Speed rating. Match or exceed the factory rating, even if you rarely drive fast.

Finding the right size

Check the tyre sidewall or the placard in the driver's door frame. A rego search narrows the list to tyres that suit your XC40.

Getting more from your tyres

  • On electric versions, instant torque can wear the driven tyres faster. Rotate at each service where sizes allow.
  • Keep pressures at the placard figure, because low pressure costs range and economy.
  • Replace tyres in axle pairs so grip stays balanced side to side.
  • Check tread depth before winter, when wet roads test grip the most.

Common questions

Do I have to fit VOL-marked tyres?

No. Any tyre in the correct size, load index and speed rating is legal, but VOL tyres match Volvo's factory tuning most closely.

Are EV tyres worth it on an electric XC40?

Usually, yes. They are designed for heavier cars and lower noise, and many roll more easily to help range.

Can I mix tyre brands on my XC40?

Avoid it on the same axle. Different brands front and rear is legal, but four matching tyres keep the handling Volvo intended.
