Petrol alloys give everyday cars and small SUVs a sportier look, with 120 wheels from $223. Nearly all are 8 inches wide, and most come in 17, 18 or 19-inch sizes, with a few 16 and 20-inch options.

The P-series designs

P4B: gloss black or matte bronze, and the most widely stocked design here.
P1E: gloss black or gloss silver.
P2E: gloss black with a machined lip, or matte black with a red lip.
P3E: matte black or brushed silver.
P4C and P5C: machine-cut faces and gunmetal.

Bolt patterns and the cars they fit

5x114.3: one of the two main patterns, covering many Japanese and Korean cars.
5x112: the other main pattern, used by Volkswagen, Audi and Mercedes-Benz.
5x108, 5x120, 5x110, 5x105 and 4x100: smaller runs for cars such as the Ford Focus, BMWs and the Holden Cruze.
Dual-drilled 10x108-114.3 and 10x112-120: one wheel suits two patterns.

Before you buy

Offset. Petrol offsets sit between +34 and +40, close to where most front-wheel-drive cars expect them.
Overall diameter. Going from a 16 or 17-inch factory wheel to an 18 or 19 means a lower-profile tyre. That keeps your speedo accurate and avoids rubbing.
Centre bore. Bores such as 72.6 mm and 76.1 mm suit many cars, so hub-centric rings are often needed.
Load rating. Car wheels here are rated around 772 kg. That suits cars and small SUVs, not loaded utes.

An upsizing example

Here's how plus-sizing keeps the same overall diameter. A 205/55R16 tyre is about 632 mm tall.

17-inch: a 225/45R17 is about 634 mm tall.
18-inch: a 225/40R18 is about 637 mm tall.

Each step adds an inch of wheel and takes away sidewall, so the total stays within about 1 per cent. Confirm the exact sizes on your tyre placard before you buy.

Common questions

Will an 8-inch-wide wheel suit my car?

Usually, for small and mid-size cars. Check the tyre you plan to fit lists an 8-inch rim in its approved range.

Which finish hides brake dust?

Matte bronze and gunmetal hide dust better than gloss black or silver.

Can I keep my factory wheel nuts?

Sometimes. Aftermarket wheels can use a different seat from factory wheels, so check before fitting. The wrong seat can let nuts work loose.
